It’s been a great year so far for German superstar producer Zedd. After achieving breakthrough success in 2011, Zedd became the toast of the EDM world with his huge remix of Breakn’ a Sweat by Skrillex and a host of massive singles. Then, he released Spectrum. The beautiful blend of exquisite vocals from Matthew Koma and emotional electro from Zedd quickly became an overnight hit, exploding onto the iTunes dance chart and claiming the #1 spot on the Beatport Top 100. Virtually every producer in the world tried their hand at remixing the smash, with a reported 20,000+ people submitting to the Beatport Remix Contest.
The Spectrum EP features an all-star group of producers and should have a little something for everybody. Dutch superstar Armin van Buuren and Anjunabeats darling Arty both do their own prog/trance remixe; it’s everything we expect from Armin and a nice progressive anthem from Arty with a dubsteppy breakdown to boot. A-Trak teams up with Dim Mak’s Clockwork for a wild electro ride, combining slashed up chords and chopped up vocals to present a very original remix. Fresh off the success on his newest single Bong, Deniz Koyu puts forth a dark and growling heavy hitter. Gregori Klosman & Tristan Garner turn Spectrum into a peak-time festival track that should be huge to hear live. Congorock has possibly my favorite remix on the EP, a banging tropical hard house remix full of growling bass and filth. Speaking of bass and filth, wait until you listen to the dubbed out Monsta remix; bassheads will rejoice, faces will melt.
Zedd also includes his newest collaboration with Nicky Romero, titled Human, a pretty big dancefloor banger in its own right. As an added bonus, the EP includes Zedd’s fantastic acoustic piano version of Spectrum (see video below), showcasing the beautiful song in it’s rawest form.
