I’ve often considered Wolfgang Gartner to be the “Godfather” of complextro. He helped pioneer a style and push a fidgety, glitchy style of house to the forefront of the EDM world. Despite his success, Wolfgang caught some fan backlash this summer when he switched things up a bit and released There & Back and Redline, two songs much more progressive than his usual electro sound. Wolfgang, while slightly perturbed, remains unfazed and unwavering, and had this to say to his Facebook followers:
“I’ve been resisting this post for so long but imma do it. Fuck it. I get these comments (usually on Facebook) like “why did you go progressive, come back to your old style, come back to complextro” etc etc. ANSWER: It just so happens that the last three tracks i released were sorta progressive house. I have six more finished, and none of them are progressive house. They’re all electro house, some of them are “my old style” and some of them are me trying to create yet another new brand of electro. Stop trippin. I didn’t change genres. I put out 3 prog tracks. I like to fuck with different styles. I’m sure I’ll do more prog tracks. I’ll do more shit like Undertaker/Shrunken Heads too (already have, just not out yet). Just don’t think because i release a few tracks in a style that’s all I’m doing for life.”
His newest release, Flexx, is a banging electro house tune that hearkens back to his roots. The track goes hard with a huge build-up, fun synth leads, and a massive drop. It’s that heavy electro we all know and love; vintage Wolfgang. Regardless of whether his recent songs were your style or not, you have to give it to the guy for not coming out with the same cookie cutter style on every track. Lots of other artists ride the wave of a certain sound for years, but not this guy. His talent shines through regardless of genre.
