2015 LessThan3 artist to watch Wiwek (pronounced WEE-wack) got his production start making trance and hip hop, but it wasn’t until he moved toward more tribal sounds that he really found his niche and created what became an entirely new genre–jungle terror.
Interestingly enough, Wiwek never set out to actually create a new genre. It began as a simple SoundCloud tag:
I was starting to make these tunes that were really tribal, but they were a bit harder than usual tribal house and I would always add these weird noises, like monkeys and chanting. I remember I was hanging out with some friends and I told them I made some “jungle terror,” ’cause that was the first thing that came up in my head, first as a joke, but after a while I started to put it as a genre in SoundCloud.
Then out of nowhere, Wiwek began to get considerable mainstream support, and producers around the world began creating their own jungle terror tunes:
During Miami 2014 my tunes were played everywhere, especially On Your Mark with Gregor Salto, and I started to notice lots of guys were inspired by it and creating similar sounding stuff which was tagged as “jungle terror” too. After that I started to realize I may have started something that other people will see as a genre. There’s a whole community going on in a Facebook group where people share all their jungle terror tunes and ideas.
Fast forward to now, and Wiwek is being support by the likes of Diplo, Dillon Francis, and Skrillex, the latter of whom recently stated in an interview that his OWSLA label would be releasing Wiwek’s music in 2015, and referred to jungle terror as “the new sh*t.” Wiwek’s also got his own label, Rimbu, which features some of the best up-and-coming jungle terror talent out there.
Clearly the Dutch upstart has a big 2015 to look forward to, and we were lucky enough to have him share some of his current favorite tracks with us. Take a listen below.
Funky Craig & Rawtek – Shaka Zulu (Original Mix) [Rimbu]
This is my favorite track I’ve released on Rimbu. I’ve been playing this tune ever since they sent it to me in August. Such a crazy tune with amazing vibes–turns every club into a mad jungle rave. These guys have been hiding under the radar, but it won’t take long before they break into scene.
Kavido – Shape (Original Mix) [Rimbu]
Tribal club house at its finest. Love that switch in the second part of the drop. Keeps the crowd grooving.
Aquadrop & Big Fish feat. Stush – Gyal Like Me (Original Mix) [Rimbu]
Excellent tune with dope vocal work from Stush. Summer vibes all over the place but still banging enough for the clubs. After I heard this I just had to work with Stush. She did the vocals on my tune Ground Shake and another one that is still coming up!
Moska & Nezzo – Barbarian (Original Mix) [Wall]
One of my latest favorites; really good choice to have those chants in the drop. Love that warrior feeling.
Nash One & Mike Cervello – Murda (Original Mix) [Rimbu]
These guys are my friends and happen to be great producers as well. I remember playing this for the first time, and the unexpected excitement from the crowd is priceless. The sweet trumpet break fits perfectly with the nasty ragga drop.
