Before BBC disc-jockey Bailey moved on from his celebrated drum and bass radio broadcast on BBC 1xtra, he welcomed red-hot Ram producer Wilkinson on his show back in July. At the behest of Bailey, the London producer made an entire dnb track out of bathroom sounds, demonstrating his level of mastery of the 170 bpm genre. His tunes like Every Time and Tonight have been played by every a-list DJ in bass music, catapulting him to the forefront of dnb in the two short years he’s been signed to Ram Records. Recently, the surging producer explored another side of bass music with his trip-hoppy Hands Up!, but has returned to his drum and bass roots with another sizzling EP called Need To Know/Direction.
This EP is clearly a double a-side, with two tunes that are sure to go off on any club PA or set of headphones. Direction, the dirtier of the two tunes on the EP, is a jaw-clenched head-banger, featuring a raucous Reese bass and a soulful vocal similarly styled to Wilkinson’s Tonight. The flip-side is the up-front roller entitled Need To Know, showcasing a little of everything; from jungle breaks to acoustic guitars, this track plucks elements from several different styles and time periods of drum and bass. Throw in the irresistible vocals of Iman, and the result is a hands-in-the-air rinse-out! Wilkinson continues to show and prove that he is a student of the genre, infusing this entire EP with sounds that are unmistakably ‘drum and bass’. Go pick up a copy of this EP at Beatport now.
