This summer, thousands of fans will catch Wilkinson at one of the various festivals he’s slated to play including Bestival, Pukkelpop, and Outlook, to name a few. The Londoner has become one of D&B’s hottest commodities since signing to RAM Records, getting massive rotation from the scene’s biggest players including BBC Radio. Evidenced by Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, and MistaJam favorites like Need to Know and Take You Higher, it’s obvious Wilkinson has the formula to get dancefloors shaking. With his highly anticipated LP Lazers Not Included set to drop later this summer, Wilkinson has just released an appetizer in the form of a 5-track EP called Heartbeat–a bass bombshell featuring several brilliant remixers. Those that have yet to read the writing on the wall only need to listen to Wilkinson’s Heartbeat to understand this man’s prodigious talent.
Out on Virgin EMI via RAM Records, Heartbeat features ubiquitous lyrical gymnast P Money and the seductive voice of Roc Nation songstress Arlissa. The two vocalists combine to give the original mix a lustrous coat of hip-hop flavor, marrying nicely with Heartbeat’s climbing syth-stabs, splashing percussion, and pulverizing bassline. Remixes of Heartbeat come from Calyx & TeeBee, Mind Vortex, and Torqux–with all remixers keeping most of P Money and Arlissa’s lyrics intact. Calyx & TeeBee’s rework adds an extruded bass motiff, several vocal edits, and also bumps up the drums to full resolution. Mind Vortex kicks their remix off with some half-time madness, eventually graduating to a full speed rhythm, and asphyxiating synthetics.
