Throughout the history of drum’n’bass, few tunes have received more rotation than DJ SS’s Lighter. It’s been rinsed by the entire alphabet of dnb DJs–from Andy C to DJ Zinc. Released on DJ SS’s own Formation Records back in 1996, the tune has remained relevant for over 15 years thanks to its creative sampling of the theme from the film Love Story and a scintillating barrage of breaks. The turn of the century saw the track get a fresh rework by Twisted Individual and SS himself, breathing new life into an already iconic anthem. Now Lighter gets another re-tooling by Bladerunner–a man known for his epic remixes.
The Lighter EP features remixes of two of DJ SS’s most memorable tunes, Black and the aforementioned Lighter. Black, originally released back in 1995, has seen several remixes along the way, but its newest remix comes from co-ed duo Silent Code. SC has really given Black a massive overhaul, transforming the original Amen break into savage bombardment of cymbals, open hats, and stuttering snares. The central ingredient of this track is its slightly detuned square wave bass that pelts out an upfront melody in typical Formation fashion. With an swanky sample of MC Skibadee, this track is sure to be a dance floor defibrillator. The other tune on the EP is the ubiquitous title track which has been floating around in dubplate form for over a year. Finally, dnb fans get a chance to grab the track and its meticulously crafted drum breaks and hyperactive bassline.
