I’m fairly convinced that one of the major rappers (Kanye, Wayne, Jay-Z, etc.) is going to be rapping over a dubstep beat before the year is out. Dubstep beats are very similar in BPM and structure to grindy hip-hop beats, not to mention that avant-garde dubstep producer Rusko is rumored to be working with the likes of T.I. and Rihanna, so it’s just a matter of time before everyone is wobbling to the wob.
I first discovered this hidden gem after reading British alt-rack band Radiohead’s blog last year. Every so often, Radiohead releases a list of the tracks they are currently listening to, and around the summer of last year this track by Harmonic 313 showed up.
Harmonic 313 is the side project of producer Mark Pritchard, who one day got the urge to start making “Detroit-style” hip hop beats, hence the 313 – Detroit’s area code. From this urge came the album When Machines Exceed Human Intelligence, which is where this track comes from. Dirtbox is a delicious dubstep ditty that really makes the listener want to get down and dirty with their dancing style. My favorite moment? When the melody switches from down to up. Listen for it – it’s genius.
