John O’Callaghan is shaping up to be one of the top trance names of 2011. With such massive releases as the Armin-supported Talk to Me–one of my favorite tracks of the year to date–it seems that JOC is now on a mission to destroy via tech, and he has certainly done such a thing on his new Captivating Sounds EP Centurion.
First up we have the title track, which takes the tech trance staple of the long, buzzing synth and makes it into something that can’t be accused of imitating an “overused” sound–it can only be accused of causing heart palpitations. Next up is personal favorite of the moment, Raw Deal. In this monster, a Simon Patterson-esque buildup leads to a sudden drop that sounds like the electro ceiling above you just caved in. Finally, Stresstest is a percolating track full of frenetic synths and and percussive elements, along with an almost jungle-like rhythm. I can’t wait for him to rip these babies out at Electric Daisy Carnival at the Circuit Grounds stage today.
