Thomas Gold is ripping it up this year and shows no sign of stopping after his recent release, AGORa, tore the roof off clubs worldwide. Toolroom Records on-boarded Gold as both a recording artist and resident DJ for their events “Toolroom Knights,” comfortably next to Fedde le Grand and Mark Knight, and Gold has certainly held his own.
AGORa is a big room banger with a breakdown that reveals its heart of gold (no pun intended). The song leads off with a bass that’s fat as hell, only to tickle you with a subdued melancholy breakdown, raising the hairs on your arms before blowing them off in the massive drop.
Marsch Marsch is a signature Thomas Gold track and a must-listen for any Gold fan. The marching band snare kicks us off, underscoring both the unique sound of the song and the confidence with which Gold puts it forth. Fast-forward to 3:00, and you see the gorgeous breakdown and tension-building skills that puts Gold on top.
Lastly, Thomas’ spin on Souk is beyond impressive, borrowing the great Mediterranean-sounding aspects of the original and revving them up with an in-your-face synth and a fully-immersing bassline. The break carries Thomas’ murky filter which slowly brings the melody up from the depths, raising it to new highs after reintroducing that mega synth.
Bottom line: some like diamonds, some like platinum. I prefer Gold.
