Boy, do I have a treat for you all today. Yesterday the Plump DJs sent over a track that I have had on repeat all morning. It’s been out for a while, but no matter. The name is The Volcano Coalition and it features a serious set of artists: The Beatles (yes, The Beatles), Kelis, and the Plump DJs. Alright, let’s pause for a moment.
If I were you I’d be pretty skeptical right now–you have good reason to be. Sampling The Beatles is usually poorly done and is mainly an attempt to get some all-around good names on your track. In addition, Kelis is hot right now, riding the success of her newly released album Flesh Tone. So what are the chances that such a powerful combination can be effectively weaved together into greatness?
The Plump DJs have defied all odds here with The Volcano Coalition, producing one of the most exciting, fluid, and fresh pieces I have heard in a while. It’s no wonder that this track is called what it is–it is truly epic to a volcanic magnitude. The Beatles’ sample is unbelievably fitting for the vibe chosen, as are the Kelis vocals. In fact, I’d wager that if you hadn’t heard either artist before you may think that this track was one group. That’s how beautifully woven this is. Take these elements and combine some well-placed hard electro basslines and we’ve got ourselves a masterpiece.
