For the past few years, Colorado producer Ben Samples has been deeply entwined in the local dance music scene. Starting as a local DJ on Colorado University Boulder’s KVCU radio station, Samples soon asserted himself as a worthy member of the Denver Bass Squad, but it hasn’t been until recently that the glitch hop phenom got the widespread attention that he and his productions clearly deserve.
Samples recently teamed up with rising glitch phenom ill.Gates in remixing Opiuo’s fan favorite Monkey Crunk. With a tempo at about 80 bpm, this track falls somewhere between dubstep and glitch hop, and the influences on both sides are clearly there. It’s like Samples and Gates squeezed the pulp out of both genres, leaving their remix of Monkey Crunk saturated with nothing but quality.
Samples also dropped an eight-track EP earlier this year that is absolutely worthy of hearing in full. Titled Skyscraper, the EP showcases massive tracks like Viracapnity and Tourmaline to display not just Samples’ own production accomplishments, but once more the blurring of the lines among genres in dance music as a whole.
