The one and only Markus Schulz was dubbed by fans The Unicorn Slayer after experiencing the relentless DJ’s new live sound. With so many spectacular artist albums out this summer, his newly released Thoughts Become Things II stands out among the rest for its haunted nature. Now in the second chapter, this LP takes you on a trip through the psyche of his twisted alter ego Dakota.
Starting off with deep progressive house tune Gypsy Room (heard in the YouTube video below), Thoughts Become Things II begins rather melodic before diving headfirst into the realm of dark techno with Red Star. Next it follows up with the festival demolishing singles Sleepwalkers and Sinners, where Schulz first gave us a taste of his reinvented Dakota project before the album released. A proud resident of Miami, Markus Schulz dedicated two tracks to the city, Miami and Terrace 5 A.M., which was inspired by playing at Club Space. Also inspired by the Polish mining town of Katowice, Markus Schulz bestowed upon the town quite a massive tune as well.
Although it was difficult to choose, I was most blown away by the tunes Tears and Saints. The first favorite, Tears was built around a supremely sentimental melody in the breakdown. The latter, Saints, is an epic monument of eerie sound with its pounding kicks and buzzy bassline.
All things considered, Thoughts Become Things II is undoubtedly my favorite album of the year so far. Having been enormously impressed with his live sets this year and his Prague ’11 compilation, the Dakota album showcases his pivotal Coldharbour sound that stands to dominate people’s perceptions of tech trance and standards on the dancefloor.
