Disco brethren, The Rinse has returned with a bevy of new drum & bass for the week. This week’s episode features some dark and dirty beats from Hive, Hyroglifics, Interline, Pisces Kollective, and The Rum Baba. We also pay homage to the old school with a frenetic cut from Dead Man’s Chest and check out a soulful number from Rowpieces. Let it roll!
Dead Man’s Chest – Cut-Throat Hardcore (Original Mix) [Ingredients]
Moonlighting under his alternate production guise Dead Man’s Chest, Alex Eveson, aka Eveson, released a throwback EP this week titled Nautilus and it’s filled with ’90s jungle vibes. The four-track EP employs classic samples that were frequently heard in the biggest jungle anthems of yesteryear, and Cut-Throat Hardcore is no different. With its twisted Amen break and analog synthetics, Cut-Throat Hardcore brings the magic of decades-old underground rave music to contemporary times.
Hive – Repentance (Original Mix) [Project 51]
Long-time D&B producer Hive has always been a bright spot for American bass music. His countless hits like Neo and Blackout did massive damage across the D&B scene in years past, and now the Bay Area veteran has returned after three years with a gritty new number called Repentance. Repentance delivers dark and techy vibes with a room-filling Reese and extended sub-bass, both channeled around an irresistible four-note melody.
Hyroglifics – Each & Every (Original Mix) [Critical Music]
Critical Music artist Hyroglifics made a huge splash on the scene this week with his pressurized, seven-track EP, No Drama. Each & Every is a staggering torpedo from the EP, delivering pummeling kick drums on top of a resonant square lead for an off-kilter experience. It’s Hyro’s creative use of rhythm and boxy melody that makes Each & Every standout from typical two-step fare.
Interline – Formula (Original Mix) [Proximity]
Irish producer Interline dropped a new, two-track EP this week on Proximity Recordings filled with heavyweight bass and a minimalistic rhythm. The A-side track Formula showcases a throbbing bassline alongside a rigid rhythmic cadence and it’s certainly not suitable for laptop speakers. Formula’s simple song structure allows the bass to take center stage resulting in a sinister warehouse track.
Pisces Kollective – Clouds Over My Sky (Rowpieces Remix) [C Recordings]
Taken from the new compilation Best of 2014, Clouds Over My Sky has been masterfully remixed by German D&B producer Rowpieces into a soulful, uplifting gem. The tune features a plucked bassline, delicate R&B vocals, and legato strings for groovy experience. This remix is part of a 17-track compilation out via C Recordings.
The Rum Baba – Meatallic (Original Mix) [Aluminum Shiny Shin Side Shack Out Music]
Fledgling UK producer The Rum Baba released an incredibly eclectic EP this week called Strike, and it features styles ranging from D&B to house. The five-track EP has three D&B cuts, one of which is the swinging, half-time exercise Meatallic. Meatallic combines a smothering bassline and a staggered array of percussion for an intense neck workout.
