The M Machine, San Francisco’s tech-minded creators of some of the most stunning sci-fi dance sounds ever to hit speakers, are back with the Just Like EP today on OWSLA, and it’s full of futuristic themes and feels from a far-off dimension.
Steely trashcan snares and a hype-bot vocal built to bring the energy make the title track a perfect introduction to the quirky club music and inspired sonic experiments in the remainder of the five-track Just Like EP. The previously unheard Don’t Speak sees the trio continue to direct their energy at the dancefloor, led by an echoey vocals and a dry, mechanical bassline that contrasts beautifully with moist, organic pops on the surface.
Over/Love introduces a calmer, vocal indie dance element to the package, while Pluck Pluck infuses a techy vibe and spoken word vocal about “the bass” that would make Tiga the tongue-in-cheek master smirk in approval.
We end things with So Change, another fine example of The M Machine’s ability to craft creative, witty, and surgically executed dance music in the rhythm and style of their choosing while always painting it boldly in that instantly recognizable M Machine glow.
