About a month ago Deadmau5 was on a live stream showcasing his production sessions. On it, he previewed a new track titled The Veldt (official video below), inspired by a short sci-fi story written by Ray Bradbury. After posting it on his SoundCloud, Joel received several tweets about a vocal edit featuring unknown vocalist Chris James. Intrigued, the Mau5 listened to it on a live stream and was floored. He quickly contacted Chris while on the air to work on the song, and immediately had his manager set up an official collaboration. The Mau5 later went on to write on his Tumblr about the process and his thoughts on Chris: “He righteously did his homework, and came up with just a few bang-on verses that completely complement the story and the mood, which is all I ever want from a song that contains lyrical content. Can’t give him props enough.”
Clocking in just under 9 minutes, The Veldt is incredibly beautiful with uplifting synths and smooth vocals, similar to his more progressive early work. This track is a great example of the power that the Internet and social media have in shaping contemporary music, and should give hope to every bedroom singer/producer looking for that one big break.
The Veldt isn’t all Joel has been putting out in recent days. the Mau5 also released another song on his SoundCloud titled Fn Pig. It starts off with a colossal build-up only Deadmau5 could pull off (seriously), followed by a melody that will have your grinning ear-to-ear before finally plunging down into a deliciously funky drop. He plans to release The Veldt EP on June 25 and a few other EPs to come later this year.
