To say Maceo Plex is having a huge year would be an understatement. RA’s #5 DJ of 2011 has undertaken a massive touring schedule as both Maceo and Maetrik, churned out hit after hit under both monikers, and grown his Ellum Audio label. Well it seems there isn’t any letting up for Eric Estornel on the label’s seventh release, his finest effort to date.
If Love Somebody Else makes you feel nostalgic, it’s because the track is a new take on an unreleased Jon Dasilva remix of a Colourblind cover of a Jones Girls disco hit. Still following? Maceo Plex tracked down Dasilva and Joi Cardwell–who laid down the vocals for Colourblind–and added his signature touch to the equation; the result is aural bliss. Sun-drenched synths and soulful vocals elegantly roll over lush and thunderous bass chords, with an extra special synth stab at 5:25 that sounds like pure pleasure. It may not have that initial “whoa” factor that Can’t Leave You brought to the table, but this is Maceo’s smoothest and sexiest work yet.
Don’t sleep on the B-side, another tribute to an unreleased old favorite. Future Musik is a re-imagining of an untitled track by Chilean/German duo Closer Musik, and the retro vibe is ever-present. This one keeps you on your toes with piercing pads before a dizzying bassline works its way to the forefront, leveling the dance floor.
