Finally at long last, the monster of a track I have been waiting for has arrived. Originally dropped by Armin van Buuren as the opening track at A State of Trance 500 in Den Bosch, The Netherlands (video below), the identity of the track was concealed for months before it was finally revealed that Orjan Nilsen was the mastermind behind the track known as The Mule.
Possibly my favorite tech trance release of the year so far, The Mule is about as high-energy as you can get. With syncopated claps and snappy snares, this track features a lot of sounds and rhythms that you don’t hear too often in trance, but it works like a charm. Once the buildup section is reached, staccato synths once again contain an off-kilter rhythm that still manages to stay in synch with everything else going on. Then there’s the drop, a frenzied craze of beats and rising and falling techy sounds that drives the crowd wild every time I have seen it dropped.
