The highly celebrated reunion of Gabriel & Dresden this year also brought with it the studio album release of Josh Gabriel’s Winter Kills project. Very much a hybrid of rock and electronic elements, the newly released production shares the acoustic side of the trance legend. Teaming up with Texas beauty Meredith Call, the LP is chock-full of vocal delicacies including the much-loved singles Deep Down and My Friend (music video below). You’re bound to be humming this album for awhile.
One of the summer’s most well-polished bundles of tunes, every one of the thirteen tracks has its own own unique mood and feel; a mix of vocal symphonies, smooth breaks, and catchy beats. Hot As Hades, for example, exercises retro synths and basslines reminiscent of the ’80s synth pop classic Sweet Dreams. Like A Stone forms a pristine harmony with a driving bass guitar strum and a terrifically bouncy drum beat. Near the end of the album, Josh Gabriel shows off one of his most beautiful productions ever: Oklahoma Town. A spectacular vocal instrumental, the tune underlines his keen understanding of music theory.
