UPDATE: VOID is out now on iTunes via WeDidIt Records.
RL Grime is days away from releasing his debut album VOID, but thanks to Pitchfork, you can now stream the album in full on the publication’s streaming service Pitchfork Advance.
Widely touted as one of the leading forces in trap, RL Grime delivers an ethereal, harmonious mix of trap, hip hop, drum & bass, and everything in between on his highly anticipated debut. Contrary to its name, VOID is a complete, cohesive effort from the budding Los Angeles producer. Opening with Always, a moderate, downtempo piano and synth number, RL Grime slowly wades into deeper, darker territories as he warms up the album with his fiery Boys Noize collaboration Danger and scorching, standout single Scylla.
In addition to tracks like Monsoon and Core, RL Grime really excels in his collaborations. Kingpin featuring Big Sean succeeds as part of the continuous consolidation of EDM and hip hop, Valhalla with Djemba Djemba sees two trap titans finding their groove together, and Reminder featuring How To Dress Well is a heavenly R&B tune with a sultry slate of subtle trap undertones. Out of context, many of the tracks on VOID might catch traditional trap fans off guard, but when listened to in its entirety, VOID is a fluid, consistent record that proves to be one of year’s best electronic, certainly trap, albums.
