Former Swedish House Mafia star Steve Angello is turning his attention to the world of TV, as he takes up the role of executive producer on forthcoming EDM drama The Drop, currently being developed by The CW and CBS.
Few plot details are currently available, but the drama is said to tell the story of a Miami-based DJ facing ruin, who finds solace in a young, talented, African-American DJ. At this stage it’s impossible to work out whether this is going to be a gritty insight into social imbalances within the music industry, or if it’s going turn out to be a gimmick, but there’s plenty to suggest it will be the former. The Drop is being written by writer/musician Kyle Jarrow–responsible for the dark satire of A Very Merry Unauthorized Children’s Scientology Pageant–and is being executive produced and directed by R.J Cutler, famous for the critically acclaimed country music drama series Nashville.
Angello himself is officially the Executive Music Producer, yet it remains to be seen whether he is simply curating a soundtrack, or if he’s going to hit the studio to create some original tunes for the show. The CW and CBS have previous history when it comes to EDM-based TV, creating the Tiesto/7Up vehicle Your Shot earlier in 2015, a reality series which gave contestants a chance to win a slot at Ultra Music Festival.
