This installment of Stay Plugged In seeks to broaden your boundless selection of sounds by bringing you reviews of two synthesizers and one effect plugin.
Swierk is Saltline Audio’s take on the classic subtractive synthesizer. Sound generation originates from four selectable sources, two oscillators, a sub oscillator, and a noise generator. Combine the sound sources with both internal and external routing options plus low frequency oscillators, two ADSR envelopes, and an eight-stage envelope generator to create great and very useable sounds for your projects. Swierk also includes 128 presets to get you started. It is available in Windows VST format.
- Two oscillators and a sub oscillator
- Noise generator
- Six internal modulation sources routable to 12 modulation slots
- Midi routing matrix
- 128 presets
SQ8L is a software emulation of Ensoniq’s classic 1980’s SQ80 synthesizer. It features three digital wavetable oscillators for each of its eight voices that are routed through analog, four-pole low pass filters. The SQ8L’s somewhat low-tech way of creating sound is the big draw here, allowing the user to easily create very interesting and useable sounds. It comes with 127 presets that represent a wide range of sounds. SQ8L is available in Windows VST format.
- Eight voice polyphony
- Three digital wavetable oscillators per voice
- Four envelopes
- Three LFO’s

Argotlunar is a granular processing plugin that achieves its effect by breaking up the incoming audio signal into individual samples, or “grains.” This allows it to tweak the original signal into a new sound. The grain size can be selected and then amplitude, panning, duration, delay, pitch, glissando, filter, and envelope settings can be applied to achieve the desired effect. The main output can also be fed back into the main input to achieve even more sonic mayhem. Argotlunar is available in Linux, Windows, and Mac VST formats.
- Amplitude, panning, duration, delay, pitch, glissando, filter and envelope controls
- Feedback level
- Main output can be fed back into input
- Host tempo synced time effects
