Let MartyParty warm you up during the winter seasons with his new downtempo dubstep EP Skukuza. A native South African, Martin Folb was introduced to the American hip hop and dance scene as a software programmer in Silicon Valley. He began DJing house and hip hop during the mid-90’s, and started doing his own productions in 2005 with a stated intention of creating “an entirely different electronic sound; something more musical, more story-telling, and [with] more diversity in the beats.” The end result is a beautiful synthesis of different styles that have influenced the artist throughout his life, ranging from African tribal to Bay Area hip hop.
It’s Complicated derives its melody from reggae, its beats from hip hop, and its bass from dubstep. All the different parts meld together into an innovative style MartyParty has branded “purple” music. The EP’s title track is even more relaxed and really brings out the melodic aspects of dubstep. Despite it’s chillness, the track still has a hot hip hop beat that’ll get you quickly on your feet. Party music can still be original, laid back, and artistic. Like MartyParty says, “It’s all about experimentation and invention…we live in a digital world. I’m not interested in emulating anything that has been done before.”
