UK producer Richard Mowatt—better known as trance legend Solarstone—didn’t pull any punches with the release of his artist album Pure earlier this year on Black Hole Recordings. To quote the man himself, “this album is both a purification and celebration of the term ‘trance.’ I’m reclaiming it for all those who just want to dance to music that takes them to another place, for whom this music is a feeling, a passion, a way of life.” He now follows up that daring statement with the latest single taken from his album tracks, Fireisland– a collaboration with none other than producers Aly & Fila, who still stick to their uplifting style unwaveringly.
So what does Solarstone’s definition of real trance sound like? The original extended mix is a mid-BPM uplifting track with a steady, deliberate energy that isn’t derailed by its Balearic-sounding break; instead, the resonant guitar lead carries the break forward into a fantastic build that swells, rather than dropping abruptly. If the original mix is the “island” half of the release, though, then Aly & Fila’s remix is the “fire.” The remix is soaked in Aly & Fila’s trademark relentless bassline, which almost drowns out the grace of the original melody, morphing it into a driving track with a life of its own. Solarstone implies that trance is changing for the worse; those are fighting words, and Fireisland is a release that comes out with guns blazing.
