For an artist who shares bills with Hudson Mohawke, Freddie Gibbs, and Rustie, there’s not nearly enough information about UK duo Snakehips. They must want their music to speak for itself. Their recently released remix of The Weeknd’s Wanderlust doesn’t speak so much as holler with soul and command. Lush, melodious and funky, they take the original–a post-apocalyptic Michael Jackson tribute with a Passion Pit-esque yearning falsetto that could make Chuck Norris cry–and transform it into a smooth jazz house stomper. It’s got more swagger than the original, powered by drum rolls, handclaps, retro synth leads, heaving pads that duck down for booming kicks, and bubbly bass riffs that worm and wrangle their way into your head like groovy ear parasites.
It’s their attention to harmony and hooks that explain why there are so many supporters of the track already (there are as many plays for this song as there are followers of the duo–over 100K to be more specific). With “♥Lots of new music on the way ♥,” this pair of producers is probably going to be gathering even more attention in the coming months, so stay tuned!
