While relatively new to the drum & bass scene, Slovenian producer Smooth has quickly ascended the ranks of the 170bpm genre since debuting on Viper Recordings four short years ago. Already remixing the likes of Matrix & Futurebound, Modestep, and Fred V & Grafix, among others, the 26 year-old bass prodigy is poised to dominate the dancefloor with his latest hands-in-the-air EP, The Sky’s Gonna Break. Following up on last year’s hotly-tipped EP Virgo Cluster, Smooth delivers more up-front vibes with a liquid A-side and rolling AA-side on his brand-new EP.
Smooth flexes some serious liquid muscle on the EP’s A-side tune, The Sky’s Gonna Break. Featuring popular D&B vocalist Shaz Sparks, the track blends a soft piano motif with Sparks’ angelic voice for a proper dousing of liquid soul. Add to it a growling low-end with distorted overtones, and suddenly the song becomes a peak-time bombshell. For a more aggressive sound, the AA-side tune Fornax delivers dirty, drumstep flavor at a face-melting, D&B resolution. With a multitude of chirping, alarm spates and a chest-pounding, formant bassline, Fornax will have dancefloor denizens fist-pumping well into the wee hours of the morning. Pick up Fornax and The Sky’s Gonna Break right here on Beatport and look for Smooth’s debut album Leap of Faith sometime in early 2014 on Viper Recordings.
