I’m just gonna come right out and say it: Slugabed’s new LP is just way too good! We love Slugabed and company for the constant stream of melodic, synth heavy glitch hop that he puts out. One beat after another, Slugabed has been heralding a new-wave style that will surely prove successful.
His new album, Time Team (album artwork above), is a truly spectacular arrangement of twelve tunes decked to the roof with synthy, melodic bass. I knew from the moment that I played New Worlds and Mountains Come Out Of The Sky that Slugabed was really bringing the heat with this one. It blows me away how much progress he has made in a year. Old Slugabed sounded like synths in space. The new Slugabed sound is more akin to something that Hudson Mohawke might release. Check out Dragon Drums for an example of this; this track is almost an interlude of sorts, but it just sounds so good, from the offbeat percussive elements in the beginning of the track to the sweeping synth sounds.
Still, Mountains Come Out Of The Sky is definitely my favorite track on the album. With an intro so hot it could raise the dead, that song is just concentrated #winning. Slugabed included Moonbeam Rider on this release as well (video below), and though I liked the EP it was originally included on, this release really just blows it away. You have to respect artists who are able to make artistic progress while maintaining their own sort of theme. That, to me, is part of what makes an artist truly amazing.
