If you consider yourself a fan of dubstep and have not heard of the name Skream, drop everything you’re doing right this instant and listen to the YouTube video below, recorded from one of 500 vinyl copies in the world. Done? Good, you’ve heard mandatory dubstep history. Skream is one of those names that define the genre right down to its very roots in the UK. His minimalistic and patient style was, and continues to be a trendsetter in the ever-shifting soundscape of dubstep.
Having been touring and producing extensively under the supergroup Magnetic Man, Skream is finally back with some refreshing new original work under his own Disfigured Dubz label. Heavy Hitter and Rigging reveal his newest musical direction; deep, dancefloor-destroying dubstep. You’ll probably find your brain slowly melting at some point through the massive bass assault. Hats Off, however, is a taste of his more subtle, drum’n’bassier history. Myself? I prefer the heavier stuff this time around.
