With the quick turnover between “new technique” and “yesterday’s sound,” few can doubt that the sounds of dance are rapidly changing. While this new development is exciting, I often reflect back on classics I’ve fallen in love with over the years and wonder what sounds similar today. With Liberate, I believe Ron Hagen and Pascal Minnaard, aka Signum, somehow capture this sentiment. It kind of makes you feel like a kid again–it’s very emotive and simultaneously uplifting.
While the style is by no means outdated, it still gives me the feeling of an old-school vocal, crossed with Shogun’s modern-day Save Me. Kate Louise Smith provides the vocals and has a similar ring to Emma Lock, Save Me‘s vocalist. Signum is not a new name; they’ve been producing for 13 years. A milestone has arrived, though–their first artist album For You was released in December, which contains this much appreciated track.
