If you’re a Burial fan, then you’re in for a treat. Experimental producer Shlohmo took Burial’s track Shell of Light from his Untrue LP and reworked it into his own interesting musical concept. The original was already ghostly and haunting, but this one takes the cake by shrouding the listener in a veil of haze. This is a prime example of a remix done right. With tracks like these and Sonnymoon’s remix of Zodiac Shift, this summer has been a fantastic season for experimental producers.
The thing to pay fine attention to in Shlohmo’s remix of Shell of Light would be the sampling. I can’t even count the number of samples in this song–to think that they were all carefully crafted and arranged into this piece of art amazes me. If there’s one word I would use to describe the essence of the song, I would say, “layers.” From the rolling drum patterns, to the sublime bass, all the way to the harmonic synth and everything in between, Shlohmo has crafted something extraordinary. I look forward to hearing more from this promising producer.
