Boston duo Shapes of Light returns to LessThan3 Recordings with their first official EP package, Chroma, highlighting both their progression from their past releases as well as their downright banging production skills.
The title track is a dark and groovy bass monster. Slithery yet skillfull basswork puts this tune in the realm of certain D&B-gone-electro pioneers, but it’s the dichotomy between the urgent buildup and the shoulders-back “don’t give a f*ck” drop that really makes Chroma shine. 8-bit influence doesn’t necessarily round out the song, but rather blings out the aforementioned bass monster, resulting in a swagged out party that doesn’t know how destructive it really is.
The B-side is Fusion, an acid-electro track that was born ready for the mainstage. Check out the stadium-sized drums in the builds and you’ll agree that this is a tune best played outdoors or in an arena. The builds also offer a warm synth to ride until the tune explodes into daft-electro madness.
River Accorsi of Mau5trap acclaim stepped up to remix Chroma, and what a remix it is. With no structure or elements glaringly linking it to the original, River truly made this track his own, which if you’re familiar with his work, you’ll know is incredible news. His looming dubstep take on the dark original is thorough, concise and near impeccable production-wise, closing the release out not just with something huge but thought provoking as well.
