It’s not hockey, but in its 17 years’ time, Shambhala has struck a chord with Canada, beginning humbly in 1998 with a crowd of 500 attendees and going on to host over 10,000 by 2010. Even outside of the true white north, Shambhala’s whopping six stages and grassroots attitude (it has no corporate sponsors and is run entirely by volunteers) has earned international recognition, winning the award for best large event in the annual Breakspoll two years in a row–in 2011 and 2012. If this doesn’t sound impressive to you, keep in mind that the other nominees included Burning Man.
Last week, the organizers began announced this year’s lineup, and it’s looking tastier than poutine. From Aug 6 to Aug 11, Salmo River Ranch will be overtaken by superstars, cult favorites, and everything in between. The headliners include big names like Bassnectar and Moby. Demolition dubstep will be represented by Datisk and Excision, while glitch hop heads will get their fix from Griz and Opiuo. Other performers include Beats Antique, Emancipator, Eoto, Skream, Mark Farina, Liquid Stranger, Phaeleh, Justin Martin, and Christian Martin (see full lineup below).
Shambhala describes this unveiling as only the “first phase” of artists, and the full list will number over 300. Don’t be a hoser and keep your ears peeled for more lineup announcements on their website.
