After a phenomenally successful 2012, Brighton drum and bass producer High Maintenance makes his 2013 debut with another electrifying EP called Searching, a 5-track banger filled with d&b, dubstep, and everything in between. Out on Mainframe Recordings, Searching features co-production from Mainframe label boss DisasZt and the striking vocal talents of Grimm (of Hybrid Minds fame). Fans of HM’s previous tunes on Audioporn and Mainframe should instantly take to his newest EP, as the young producer continues to impress with his big-room sound and blistering breaks.
After an occasional divergence into the lower bpm’s last year, d&b aficionados can rest assured that High Maintenance redlines from start to finish with his newest EP. The first tune on the EP called Breaking Down features a lambasting drum track and layers upon layers of growling, drumstep synths. Grimm supplies the magnetic vocals on Breaking Down, providing a nice contrast to the filthy timbres found around every corner of the tune. The next song called Freedom is a bit more cheeky than Breaking Down, showcasing high-pitched squeaks, sawing chord stabs, and a jump-up rhythm. For the dubstep heads, skip to the track called I Want It to get a dose of the more musical side of the 140bpm genre. Beginning with a hypnotic arpeggio, this tune soars with an uplifting chord progression, accompanying melodies, and a delicate vocal sample.
