Melodic patterns you say? Soul-crunching basslines too? I’ll take it. I mean, I wouldn’t expect anything less from a Colorado based producer like Ricky Shine (pictured on right), who performs under the moniker The Digital Connection. Recently, I got my hands on DC’s Collective Human Consciousness LP, which is a blend of artfully conducted melodies, funky bass, haunting psychedelic sound samples, and that quintessential glitch hop soul. Listening through the LP, you can tell that Mr. Shine is one of those artists who loves to push the envelope: his glitched out space hop drumstep sound is something totally unique, and it’s clear that Ricky Shine is just getting started.
The entirety of Collective Human Consciousness is fire; it’s this cool compilation of snippets of Ricky Shine’s consciousness, and a look into the collective sound of the glitch hop demographic. The Singularity is a dope track with an eerie tone set by a rather jarring sample in the beginning, followed by an absurd buildup to a bassy, glitched out drop. Ideal, to say the least. To follow that track up, feast your ears on Pineal. Named for the brain-bound gland that used to be thought to be the seat of the soul, this track kicks, snaps, pops, and crackles. If that isn’t enough for you, wash it down with the predictably fantastic title track. It isn’t clear where DC is going with his music. The only thing that is clear is that we can expect good things in the future from a producer who shows such promise.
