Over the weekend, I came across a fantastic set of remixes featuring a little-known duo named Split & Jaxta. It was a real throwback to some of electro’s more melodic days–before complextro and the Porter Robinson vocal/dubstep/house fusions. With a set of absolutely room-wrecking remixes, the Roulette EP definitely puts the “house” back in electro house.
The original makes me feel like it’s 2006 and fidget is the newest thing in EDM since epic trance. While Beatport calls it an “indie dance” number, we all know that a few years ago it would’ve just gone by the tag of electro; no abundance of funky electric basslines can change that.
A bit more similar to the current sound of electro is the Le Castle Vania remix, a balls-to-the-wall interpretation that trades in the indie for a good helping of slam. This remix absolutely blew my socks off on the first listen; it’s just the right dose of rock n’ roll rage in electro. The Terravita remix is almost as stellar, with a dub sound that shames the competition with a glorious drumstep march.
