Back in June, Phange covered Pendulum’s new album, Immersion. It wasn’t until recently, however, that I heard Under the Waves, and I’ve been pretty obsessed with it ever since. Sometimes when I play this track for people I get feedback that it kinda sounds like a video game. You know–that’s true. It’s all due to that one sorta 8-bit synth that they use after the drop. But you know what’s also true? It’s not overly done and fits in quite well into the overall flow of this beautiful track. That and I’m a huge gamer, so it will always have a special place in my heart no matter what anyone says.
What I particularly love about this track are the lyrics and Pendulum’s creative use of them. I talk about this from time to time, for example, when I covered Mary Doesn’t Mind Anything. The reason I care so much is that it really adds a little extra polish to a song–the details make the difference. In Under the Waves, for example, the use of “we’ve reached the end” to cut the track out to the buildup is genius. Aside from the vocals, the second major drop around 4:00 uses a slower beat pattern which provides some nice variety and cools things down for a pleasant finish.
