One word that comes to mind when talking about drum’n’bass heavyweight duo Tantrum Desire would be… inescapable! A favorite of BBC 1xtra’s Crissy Criss, their new track Reach has been getting regular play from all the top heads in the game. As usual, the Reach EP comes by way of Simon “Bassline” Smith’s Technique Recordings, and it’s an upfront rinse-out of the highest order. Reach represents their first original production since they dropped the huge Foreplay EP over the summer. That’s not to say they haven’t been putting in work, though; they’ve been remixing tunes for ShockOne’s Viper imprint and DJing around the world in places like Slovakia, Poland, and France.
Reach is an explosive dnb tune that’s full throttle from beginning to end. Filter wobbles are a chief component to the appeal of this tune, borrowing from the very sound that defines dubstep. The wobbles only stop when the shredding synth lead takes over, never allowing the listener a single breath of air. The vocal track adds the perfect amount of energy, supplying another layer of greatness to an already massive tune. Technique Recordings was also kind enough to release an equally nasty drumstep remix of Reach provided by Technique producer-at-large L Plus. The drumstep version is a complete rework, adding a different lead synth line with even more imposing sub-frequencies than the original edit. Thankfully, however, the vocal track is a direct transplant. Both of these tunes will be seeing major rinsing for the next few months. Winning!
