Berlin’s Will Rankin is a sucker for dramatic gestures. As High Rankin, he likes to play the role of Godzilla, decimating cities with blistering dubstep, violent drum & bass, and any sounds he can find that might be capable of starting fights. Now, as Rain City Riot, he’s put down his heavy artillery in order to make something a little more soulful. His latest EP, Burning, contains passionate, R&B infused deep house, with cinematic touches that will get your fists pumping and fingers reaching for the stars.
Simplicity is the name of the game here. The title track only needs a short grand piano riff to get your hair rising. A bed of pads, strings, and wind prepare you for some sort of epic verse, but after the build it doesn’t get louder–instead it drops into something sexy, urban, and smoky. Eyes Closed begins with a standard four-chord keyboard progression. But if you close your eyes as the epic strings start to sneak in, you’ll see the keys fade away and get replaced with the dashboard of a car driving off into the sunset as credits roll. Two excellent remixes of Burning from Hostage and DVWLX round off the set.
