She’s been dubbed “Queen of the Underground” by MixMag and just recently put out a hauntingly beautiful Essential Mix. If you haven’t heard of Maya Jane Coles yet, then you’ve seriously been missing out. At the young age of 23, Maya has been heralded as one of the big breakthrough artists of 2011 by some of the top names in the biz. She’s been making music since her mid-teens, both within and outside the realm of EDM. Although known primarily for her house and techno productions, Maya has also been known to dabble in futuristic bass and dub under her alias Nocturnal Sunshine.
I’m going to start off by showing you one of her edgier tracks. Her recent remix of Little Dragon’s Ritual Union is as deep and sexy as it is haunting and ghostly. Super low bass frequencies and reverbed synthesizer turn an upbeat tune into a minimal masterpiece, and the dark guitar chords are perfect in this track. I haven’t heard minimal this good in a long time. This next one is an original. Humming Bird has made a big impact on the deep house scene, being featured by Mark Knight on Toolroom’s Miami 2011. Once again, Maya uses her minimal prowess to construct a sexy and sophisticated track. Finally, I’d like to show you the Dyed Soundorom remix of her track What They Say. The original, released back in 2010, was a great beat in its own right, but the recent remix gives it just that extra umph to really get the groove goin’ on the dance floor. I think you’ll find yourself groovin’ right in your seat as well.
