At the moment, the rapidly growing progressive genre is offering a plethora of superb talent that’s responsible for the genre’s wealth of material. One of those names is Ben Preston. The UK progressive/trance DJ has had a breakthrough year in 2010. First, he had his fantastic track Pillars Of The Earth included in Black Hole Recordings’ progressive compilation release In Search Of Sunrise 8 (click the link to hear the track). Just recently, he had his new track New Planet honored as “Record of the Week” in Above & Beyond’s weekly radio show and podcast Trance Around The World.
Preston’s refreshing use of plucky string synth grooves and tech beats in Pillars Of The Earth makes it one of the coolest tracks on a compilation filled to the brim with massive tunes. New Planet follows a similar compositional structure in addition to a moving melodic synth melody that invokes a complex emotional response. Preston’s work demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of modern house and trance composition, and I love that these influences are seamlessly integrated together.
