Italian DJ Nick Olivetti has graced us with the premiere of his excellent new tech house tune, Looping Machine, from his latest EP of the same name. It may be a little late for year-end best-of lists, but the dude’s just so ahead of his time that this one won’t even enter the conversation ’til we start hammering out our 2014 favorites.
As the final EP set for release on Dirtybird this year, Olivetti’s Looping Machine is a worthy capstone to what has turned out to be a banner year for the label. Ever the restless audio experimenter, Nick explains his idiosyncratic process for assembling the Machine:
I started building the track from the drums (as I do most of the time), then I moved straight to the bassline; the sound for the bass is a low pitched tom while the other accompanying sound is still a tom, but much higher in pitch.
That’s right–no instruments to speak of here, just carefully pitched percussion layered underneath choppy, free-floating vocal samples. And yet you’d never know it if we didn’t tell you, because Looping Machine is packed full of subtle hooks and relentless grooves. The EP will be out Dec. 16 on Beatport, care of dirtybird.
