Straight from the other side of the galaxy comes the next big thing in dubstep. 12th Planet has been crushing skulls with his monster productions and remixes for the past few years in the dub circuit, and it only looks like things are getting bigger for the LA-based producer. He recently played at Nocturnal and has been performing alongside other heavy hitters like Skream and Flying Lotus. His beats seem heavily influenced by hip hop and underground rap, much like a another American dubber, Bassnectar.
The first song that got me hooked was a dope remix of MSTRKRFT’s Heartbreaker. You’re probably familiar with the Laidback Luke remix, but this time around it’s 12th Planet who takes the cake. Hi-hats and deep bass serve to convey John Legend’s voice with faultless projection. Wobbly synth also adds a bit of needed grime to the track without taking away from the anthemic lyrics. Simple in structure but enormous in heart, 12 Planet’s remix of Heartbreaker hits home like few dubstep songs do nowadays.
Now that I’ve tickled your fancy, I also suggest you check out 12th Planet’s remix of Hold On by Rusko. It has the same hands-in-the-air feel of Heartbreaker, perfect for a live show. At this point in time, there are only a handful of dubstep artists with a “big-room sound,” and I’m pleased to say that 12th Planet seems to have joined their ranks. Check his Facebook for more songs like these.
