BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix, curated for the past 22 years by Pete Tong, has long been a benchmark for dance music across the globe. With his move to Los Angeles several years ago, Tong has been a key player in the rise of dance music in the US, and now he’s bringing the fabled Essential Mix name to an American audience for the first time in the form of a live event.
The inaugural US Essential Mix Live series will kick off in LA on Jan. 22, with a headlining set from Richie Hawtin at Exchange LA. Speaking of the event and the dance music scene in general, Tong was keen to highlight the importance of the US in recent years. “The Essential Mix has always been about championing what’s new and next,” he said. “So much has happened to electronic music in America in the last five years, and much of that change has been born out of LA, and the community of artists and industry professionals that live here. We’re incredibly lucky to kick start this American series with Richie, who has been such an influential artist in the story of American techno music.”
Tickets for the event are available here, and keep your eyes peeled for forthcoming news of further Essential Mix Live shows in other US cities.
