I’ve been eagerly awaiting the next song from rising Canadian producer OVERWERK since the release of his smashing debut EP The Nth Degree in November of 2011 (available for free download here). After watching him level the dancefloor inside the Guvernment complex a few nights ago, I caught up with Mr. Edmond Huszar and got his opinion on the state of EDM. OVERWERK pulls no punches in the candid conversation, calling out complextro heavyweights such as Porter Robinson and Wolfgang Gartner for recent releases that are “ultra disappointing… I think they are both so creative, innovative & inspiring, but each of their latest releases have been… soft, repetitive and a major step away from what they are great at.”
You may not agree with his opinions, but the same can’t be said for his crisp productions. His newest single is House, a melodic, synth-driven electro track featuring the smooth vocals of Nick Nikon. He also made a banging remix of Hyper Crush’s aptly named Werk Me, free on his SoundCloud. Both tracks feature OVERWERK’s signature crunchy synths and bass and are standouts in an increasingly clogged electro scene. “The house sound has exploded so much so, it’s getting recycled exponentially and overly predictable. I feel this will cause the scene to move towards more technically creative tracks… now more than ever I’ve been looking for inspiration in other genres.” Expect to see more interesting sounds this brash young star in 2012.
