He may only be 18, but Jerry Folk definitely knows his way around music. The young producer turned out a slew of sophisticated beats in 2013, most recently with his remix of ZZ Ward’s 365, and they’re all up for grabs as free downloads on his Facebook page.
In his latest release, Folk takes ZZ Ward’s pop tune and transforms it into total nu disco bliss with a funky bassline while balancing Ward’s soulful voice with synths and finger-snapping. The result is an intoxicating powerhouse track that completely transforms the slow, emotive feel of the original. If Ward’s song is the story of heartbreak, Folk’s remix is the angry post-breakup berating.
Dreamy, soft house melody was the theme of Folk’s spin on Jill Scott’s Daydreamin’, released this fall. Folk removes Lupe Fiasco’s vocals in his version, instead focusing on Scott’s soothing chords and highlighting them with upbeat keyboard tones.
The Oslo-based DJ also showed his depth with his bootleg of The Fugees’ Ready or Not, a deep house jam featuring a dark rhythm and robotic singing. The track emits an almost haunting feel, with high chords interspersed in a deep background beat. Pick this one up along with the rest as a free download.
If 2013 was Mr. Folk’s breakout year, we can’t wait to see what 2014 brings. Like him on Facebook, and download his jams here.
