Gotta love free music, and I’ve got some more for you guys this week. Nate Rodriguez-Vera has his hands full these days as a producer and sound designer/editor for film, TV, games, and other forms of media. With a masters in music technology from the esteemed Steinhardt School at NYU, the native Puerto Rican has been putting his skills to good use in dance music production. Last week I had the opportunity to talk to him a little bit about some of his exciting new projects.
As Deathwave, Nate uses his sharp grasp of multiple musical genres to push the boundaries of dubstep and electro. “I was going outside of what I had been doing,” says Nate, synthesizing acid, jacking, and other early forms of house with hip hop sounds and “heavier, darker, and grimier production”. He accredits much of the Deathwave sound from his earlier years in drum’n’bass. The end result is a synthesis of dark wobbly sounds that are simply addictive. Available for free, POWER is a monster dubstep jam inspired and sampled from the 1990 dance hit The Power by German group Snap! If you like the track, make sure to check out his stellar mix, which features a few of his upcoming tracks that are bound to show up on this site soon.
A bit more on the mellow side is the Nathan Vice project, which can also be characterized by its fusion of classic and modern music. Think of modern electro/fidgeted house heavily retrofitted with disco, 80s film soundtracks, and hair metal. Make sure to check out his new and free EP, Appetite for Absurdity, whose title track is featured above.
