Musical Varience
Varien - Throne of Ravens (Original Mix)
Varien - Mirrors (Original Mix) [Monstercat]

Varien is a noun, and it means transformation. The Tampa-based, Monstercat rookie takes sounds as we know them and mutilates them into dangerous basswaves. Making an appearance on Skrillex’s recent Bangarang EP, this guy is no brick in the wall to be ignored. With serious “knowledge of music theory and background as a video game music composer,” Varien delivers on all fronts with his new single, Mirrors.

Currently destroying the Beatport charts, Mirrors is a force to be reckoned with. It’s clear that Varien’s got a keen ear for what tends to kill it today, and the kicker is that this song’s got it all. A tempo shift in the middle allows for a moombahcore throwdown after the hard drumstep has had its way. The other song I’ve included, Throne of Ravens is a free download that you can pick up on his Facebook. Locking in the sick, metal-bending sounds of distorted guitar, the man revels in his versatility. It’s got all the polish expected of today’s top electrostep and then some, as Varien pulls influences from all his spheres of musical mastery.
