Last month, Mr. Oizo graced the world with his release of Stade 2. The album constituted a good helping of twisted and deranged indie dance music. Released on the legendary Ed Banger Records, several of the albums tracks have gotten plenty of support from the likes of Busy P, Soulwax, and Boys Noize. Rather than write a full review of this bizarre spectacle of dance music, I’m going to share with you three songs I thought were especially trippy from the album.
I first heard Douche Beat when Soulwax dropped it at HARD Haunted Mansion. Since then, I had been wondering what exactly that song was–and lo and behold, it was Oizo. That hook is really all you need for the track to get stuck in your head for a good two months. France7 is also a very popular track from the album; pulling from elements of fidget and dark techno, the song is as bold as it is ludicrous. Drops of arbitrary synth give France7 a very edgy feel, certainly well-fitted for dark house parties. Finally, Druide employs brash electro riffs to deliver an avant-garde progression of slow buildups which drop into a pit of big beat thumps and clouds of echoes. Stade 2 is definitely an album for the polished listener. However unorthodox it may be, it shows that Mr. Oizo is a very talented, very idealized artist in every sense of the word.
