Rap-loving beatsmith Mr. Carmack’s six-track White EP re-imagines pop music as a party for him and his groove-making friends to crash, spike the punch, and watch everyone go wild.
Carmack and Promnite’s take on Mike WILL Made It’s Drinks On Us was already premiered, and its soulful, woozy, and trap-inspired production actually provided a solid idea of what else was to come. The track likely to get the most rinses here is Hit That, which is what happens when Enur’s 2007 hit Calabria finds its way to not just Mr. Carmack, but Brazilian producer OMULU and Dallas’ Juyen Sebulba, too. The trio blends tropical percussion, fanciful synths, scattershot 808s, and a sample of vocalist Natasja saying “hit that” into a wild production.
Berner and B-Real’s single Blowing Money Fast gets a remix that feels like the best of Swizz Beatz in 2004 meeting peak-hour of a Vegas big room trap set in 2015. It’s a mercurial blend that works quite well. Not so much a trap banger as it is booming rap anthem, the track is a must-listen. Speaking of throwback sounds, Synchronize is little more than a trap remix of Groove Armada’s Grammy winning 2001 single Superstylin’, which in the original being a dub reggae inspired house banger, the trap interpretation makes sense and is also well-executed.
Mr. Carmack’s fellow Soulection crew affiliate and star rapper Goldlink’s breakout single Dance On Me getting a swinging trap remix and electro/breaks take on Altrego’s Coming At You closing out the EP definitely showcases Carmack as a rap-friendly dance name to watch right now.
