Hawaiian producer Mr. Aaron Carmack has made a name for himself with the sort of larger-than-life trap and wild bass music that’s perfectly befitting of an up-and-coming Mad Decent affiliate. This week, however, Carmack demonstrates a deeper sense of patient musicality with Oh, Brooklyn // Red Shift, his first release through Perth, Australia’s Die High Records.
Oh, Brooklyn, which first appeared among a bevy of new tracks that have popped up on Carmack’s SoundCloud page over the last couple weeks, is a delightful introduction to the producer’s newly relaxed style. It’s got all the groove we’ve come to expect, but any hint of aggression has been replaced by a chilled, loungey vibe. Same goes for the previously unreleased Red Shift, which is built around choppy, jazzy keys and an even more minimal percussion backbone.
Whether these two tracks represent a one-off experiment or an indication of what’s to come, they’re a surprising and exciting addition to Mr. Carmack’s exceptional discography. Download both tracks on Bandcamp on the “pay-what-you-want” (no minimum) scale.
