After a brief hiatus, Moogfest 2014 announced its return to Asheville, North Carolina this week, in addition to its phase one lineup, offering showcases from labels like Fool’s Gold, Crew Love, and more.
The festival was created to celebrate electronic music in the name of Dr. Bob Moog, the inventor of the essential Moog synthesizer. The five-day festival is located in the city’s downtown area where it is spread across multiple venues, offering a refreshing take on the festival experience. Unlike most other festivals however, Moogfest goes beyond electronic music and synthesizes music, art, and technology. Between April 23 and April 27, festival goers can attend daytime “innovation conferences” (think TED Talks!) and artist showcases involving some of the most brilliant minds in music.
Following a well-received contribution to Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories, disco pioneer Giorgio Moroder has been chosen as a daytime presenter alongside musician Laurie Anderson, film composer Cliff Martinez (Drive), and many others. While the full nighttime music lineup has yet to be released, we can clue you in on some major labels that will be making an appearance in Asheville. LessThan3 favorite, Fool’s Gold, will be bringing its funky mix of electro, house, and trap to this year’s festival, but for those deep and tech lovers out there, Moogfest 2014 will not disappoint. Proper house label Crew Love will have a showcase at the festival, and with associated acts like Wolf + Lamb, Soul Clap, and PillowTalk, we cannot wait to see what they have in store for us.
Two of 2013’s most talked-about acts, Tale of Us and Noir, have released tracks on No. 19 Music, another label that will be hosting a showcase at Moogfest. For those of us who are still mourning the breakup of LCD Soundsystem, we’ll get some relief when James Murphy’s DFA Records visits the southern festival. WARP Records, the groundbreaking British label, has also been added to the phase one lineup alongside indie label Ghostly International. Perhaps most exciting is Moogfest 2014’s partnership with Paxahau, the promoters responsible for Movement Electronic Music Festival. Movement recently released its phase one lineup, which includes hometown favorites Carl Craig and Stacey Pullen, Resident Advisor’s #1 DJ of 2013, Dixon, Desolat’s Loco Dice, and many other big-name deep and tech artists. If Movement’s well-stocked lineup is any indication, the Paxahau showcase at Moogfest 2014 will deliver a healthy dose of Detroit groove to the Tar Heel State.
